Opatija

In the year of 1889 Opatija already possessed shaped parks, luxurious villas, hotels and similar structures, and had gained the status of an elite summer and winter resort. Centre "Zora" with a reading-room had its formal opening the same year, which was the centre of Croatian cultural life in Opatija and its surroundings.

The architecture of hotels and villas of this period shows characteristics of historical neo-styles. Complicated fronts and apertures (balconies, loggias) give the buildings a Mediterranean quality of style.

Opatija has a long tradition of hosting many events and offers a high-level of entertainment: Carnival in January and February, Musical Festival is awarded in March, International Yachting Regatta in May and lastly the Opatija Yachting Cup is held in November. Opatija has one of the most important congress centres in Croatia.
